In this workshop, students will embark on a journey through the rich culture and history of henna, with a special focus on its significance in South Asia. Students will not only explore the beautiful and intricate world of common henna designs but will also have the opportunity to practice crafting their very own henna patterns.
Recommended grades: 4 - 7
Supplies needed:
Skin-toned construction paper (shades of beige and brown) if possible, if not, white paper is fine.
White paper for rough copies and pencils
Markers - Brown and Black
Hand outs of common henna designs - to be sent out approximately a week before the workshop
About the artist: Sara-Maya Kaba is a multidisciplinary artist, educator and arts practitioner. She is a dancer, a poet, a digital mandala artist, and she is currently training in classical Hindustani vocals. Her art bridges different disciplines together with the aim of fostering empathy and creating spaces for common connection. Throughout 2023-2024, she developed and implemented an arts-based mental health education program that she delivered to 500+ underserved youth and educators across Pakistan. She is staunch in her belief that the arts are the most effective facilitator of social change, and believes that the arts hold the power to bridge divides and heal. Sara-Maya is a co-founder of The Fourth Space - a non-profit dedicated to positive youth development. She lives for deep conversations over cups of hot chai!
