Jube School Presents: Breaking Down & Beating Up Shakespeare with Billy Brown
Do you have a problem with Shakespeare? Ever wanted to get back at the Bard for making your life in school so hard? Have no fear, the answer is here. Join me in this one hour workshop where we will break down and beat up Shakespeare’s classic writings into something we can actually understand. By the end, you’ll even be able to write your own Elizabethan Play! Take that William!
Recommended grades: 7 - 9
Supplies needed: Paper and pencils
Outline:
Break It Down
(students will be shown iconic passages from Shakespeare’s Text with a modern translation)
Beat It Up
(students will learn the basics of understanding and interpreting Shakespearean Text)
Shakespearean Slang
(students will translate and use Shakespearean Punctuation)
(students will learn wacky Elizabethan era Phrases)
Act for the GLOBE
(students will perform as various characters and archetypes found in Shakespeare's plays)
Make Your Own Shakespearean Play!
(in a group, students will create a short Shakespearean play full of passages and phrases we have explored)
About the artist: Billy Brown is an actor, singer and teacher from Sherwood Park, Alberta and is absolutely thrilled to be teaching in this online workshop! Billy is a graduate of MacEwan University’s Theatre Arts Program, the University of Alberta’s BFA in Acting Program and the University of Alberta's BEd Program. Billy has experience working in theatres across western Canada including The Citadel Theatre, Theatre Calgary, Freewill Shakespeare and Western Canada Theatre. Currently, Billy works for Foote Theatre School at The Citadel Theatre, Edmonton Public Schools and Elk Island Public Schools. Lastly, Billy wishes everyone to “break it down” and to have fun!
