In this hands-on workshop, students will explore the visceral sensations of winter through embodied movement exercises. Through music and movement, uncover the fascinating ways various animals adapt to survive the harsh cold of winter on the open prairies. Each student will create an animal mask that reflects details from the imaginative worlds they have discovered through body-based learning. Mask and clown expert Jacqueline Russell will guide students on a fun and adventurous journey to uncover all the delights and surprises that can be found under the snow! Supplies needed:
One piece of 8.5 x 11 fun foam or construction paper per student
Scissors, glue, and colourful paper to design the masks
Elastic or string and a hole punch
White glue or glue sticks for paper
Low-temperature glue guns if using fun foam
Recommended Grades: 1 - 4
About the Artist: Jacqueline (she/her) is a director, performer, creator, arts educator, and clown from Treaty Seven territory. She has taught workshops in clown, physical theatre, and creation across the country, from Comox to Montreal. Jacqueline is a graduate of the BFA program in Acting at the University of Alberta and completed her MFA in theatre studies at the University of Calgary. She loves making art in unexpected places.
